Abstract

Resistance in Temanggung tobacco lines to tobacco aphid (Myzus persicae Sulzer)The evaluation on the esistance of Temanggung obacco lines against tobacco aphid was carried out in Malang, from August 19% to March 1997. The experiments consisted of antixenosis and antibiosis resistance. The teatments wee four tobacco lines fom the original population: (1) S.2258, (2) S.2132, (3) S.l%3, (4) S.1965; four lines rom selected population: (5) S.2258/2/1/1, (6) S.2132/2/2/1/1, (7) S.1%3/3/2/1/2/1, (8) S.1%5/2/1/2/1/1; one local line: (9) Kemloko (Gober genjah); two varieties resistant and susceptible o tobacco aphid: (10) Coker 176, and (11) NC95. The treatments wee arranged in randomized block design, with three replications. The esults showed that the two lines from the selection evaluation: S.2258/2/1/1 and S.1%3/3/2/1/2/1 wee resistant to tobacco aphid. Both lines had high density of leaf trichomes, and can be used as resistant resources in plant breeding activities.

Abstract

Response of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum I.) to potassium fertilizer at vertisol Bangkala JenepontoThe study on the response of cotton o potassium on upland was carried out in vertisol Bangkala Jeneponto, South Sulawesi. The experiment was held on January 1994 to July 1994. The teatments consisted of seven rates of Potassium fertilizers viz : 0, 15, 30, 45, 60, 75 and 90 kg K20/ha or equal to 0, 25, 50, 75, 100, 125 and 150 kg KCI/ha. The teatments were arranged in a randomized block design, with four replications. The esearch results indicated that cotton responded to potassium applications. Potassium ertilizer could improve cotton esponded o potassium applications. Potassium ertilizer could improve coton growth and yield component, and seed cotton production. The response curve was still linear. The moe KCI applied, the better the cotton growth and yield component, and the seed cotton yield. The application of Potassium ertilizer 125 kg KCI or 75 kg KjO/ha on coton planted on vertisol Bangkala Jenepono produced seed coton yield I 911 kg/ha.

Abstract

Pseudocercospora liebenbergii the cause of leaf spot disease on Rauwolfta serpentinaThe experiments wee conducted at Reseach Institute for Spice and Medicinal Crops, rom Ocober 1995 o March 19%. The objective of the experiments wee to identify the causal agent of leaf spot disease on Rauwofia serpentina and some ecobiological aspects. The expeiments were divided into two steps. The first step was observation on the disease intensity and identification of the causal agent. The second step was testing the effect of temperature and light on the mycelia growth and the germination of conidia, and the survival of conidia at diferent ranges of elative humidity. The results showed that the pathogenic of leaf spot disease is Pseudocercospora liebenbergii, newly eported pathogenic fungus in Indonesia. The fungus infected leaf only. The disease intensity ranged between 0-85%/plant with the average 22.23%. The first symptoms i.e. light spots wee observed 2-3 weeks after the inoculation. Stroma wee found on the upper and botom of the oldest spots The optimum temperatue for fungal growth ranged between 20-28°C. Continuous light was able o induce the growth of aerial mycelia but failed against the fungal rate. The germination of conidia occured at temperature between 20-32°C with an optimum of 24°C. Conidia on the surface of the oldest leaf spots were still viable ater the leaves wee incubated for 48 hours at 55% elative humidity.

Abstract

An alternative to produce healthy planting materials of ginger is through tissue cultue. However, the information on productivity and cultural practices or such mateial is still limited. Among the cultural aspects, fertilizer application and plant spacing mostly afect plant growth and yield. The objective of this study, was o evaluate the effect of fertilizer application and plant spacing on the growth and yield of rhizome. Planting materials (tissue culture and conventionally derived rhizomes) wee espectively planted in two plant spacings (60 cm x 40 cm and 40 cm x 30 cm) and applied with two levels of ertilizers (with and without fertilizer). The fertilizers applied were 40 tons stable manure and urea, TSP, and KCI wee 400 kg/ha. The expeiment was conducted in the Sukamulya Expeimental Station (Sukabumi)) rom August 1994 to  December 1995 in a split-split plot design in four replicates. Die main plot was ertilizer application, the sub plot was plant spacing and the sub-sub plot was planting material. The parameters used for evaluating the response of the plants to the treatments wee growth components (plant height stem circumeence, number of tillers and leaf size), and yield components (weight and size of rhizome). Results revealed that plants rom tissue culture generally showed the lower growth performances with lower yield and size of rhizomes, except in the number of tillers. The application of urea, TSP, and KCI at a respective rate of 400 kg/ha significantly increased plant height (rom 49 o 60 cm), stem circumerence (rom 2.2 o 2.6 cm) and weight of rhizome/clump (rom 206 o 379 g). Plant spacing did not affect any parameter observed. Interaction efect was shown between the source of planting materials and fertilizer application on the number of tillers and the thickness of rhizomes. For the plants rom tissue cultue ertilizer application significantly increase the number of tillers (rom 18 o 30 tillers/clump) and for those rom conventional rhizome the treatment did not afect the parameter. On the other hand, for the plants rom conventional rhizome ertilizer application improved the thickness of rhizome (rom 2.51 o 3.17 cm) while for those rom tissue cultue the teatment did not give any efect on the parameter. The thickness of rhizome was also afected by the interaction between fertilizer application and plant spacing. For the plant spacing of 40 cm x 30 cm, ertilizer application inceased the thickness of rhizome (from 1.68 to 2.11), while those of 60 cm x 40 cm, the teatment did not afected the parameter.

Abstract

Effect of gambir leaf extract on the terong KB pest Epilachna varivestis MulsantThe utilization of synthetic insecticides to control pests has caused some problems, so that it is necessary to ind out some biopesticides to control diem. The chemical contents of the gambire plant (Uncaria gambir Roxb) are katcchine. tanin catecu (tannat), flouresine, and kucrsitine These chemical contents are potential for biopesticide. Therefore, research on the application of gambire leaf extract on the pest of terong KB was conducted in IPPTB I.aing, Solok, West Sumatera. The research used a completely randomized design with five replications. The treatments were gambire leaf extract at the concentrations of 250, 500, I 000, 1 500 ppm, and 0 ppm (without leaf extract as the control), lbe results of the research indicated that gambire leaf extract has an insecticide charactic on E varivestis, whee the most efective concentration was I 500 ppm which caused larvae mortality at I, II, III, IV instars, and imago 52.20% 50.40% 40.80% 36.80% and 11 35%. Besides, it also caused the decease in egg hatches and the change of pupae into imagoes of about 32.59% and 37.98% respectively. The efect of the leaf concentrations above resulted in the lie cycle period of the pest, eating habit of the larvae and ecundity level of the imagoes.
